I am new to the Apple world with regards to PCs and laptops. I know that you need mac apps for the mac and PC apps for the PC. But what I'd like to know is this: are the data files the apps create compatible with the apps for the other platform? For example, are the data files for Word on the PC compatible with a word processor app on the mac?

Thanks,
Mindy

Word docs can be opened by Word for Mac, TextEdit, Pages (Apple's Word equivalent and part of iWork, which is Apple's equivalent of Microsoft Office), NeoOffice, OpenOffice, etc. Most file types can be opened on a Mac as easily as Windows.

Yes, in general they are. All office files can be used on Macs. Either in Mac version of offie, open office, Pages etc. And all the programs that have equivalent versions on Mac work too. And i am sure for all the rest there is a workaround:)
