This is a very old problem I have. When I last synced my iPod touch to my MBP iTunes I lost a piece of music I bought directly on the device. I wasn't even able to find a option to redownload a piece of music which was previously bought, again- free of charge. It appears to me that somehow my iTunes is set up to mirror its Music, Mails, Notes and everything else on to the mobile device instead of Synchrosnising (combining) the two data sets. This is of course fatal and this is why after the accident with the lost music I stoped synching which is sad because the iPod touch is such a powerful and handy device, but without up to date data is pretty much useless.
Do you have any ideas what went wrong?
UPDATE1: I found a option to disable automatic syncing. I have enabled this and I'm now exploring the iPods settings. There are many things I don't understand, for example "Sync only checked songs and videos" can be checked but at the same time in the Music tab "Sync entire Music library" can be active.
UPDATE2: "Manually manage music and videos" is also misleading because its also interfering with other comparable settings. Looking for technical definition of these terms now...
UPDATE3: Only when right clicking on the iPods symbol there is an hidden option called "Transfer purchases". I never used this, maybe thats the reason for my data loss.
UPDATE4: I'm reading iTunes manual and there seems to be an option called Erase and Sync somewhere which I think I accidentally clicked.
UPDATE4: OK, using "Transfer purchases" now everything worked flawlessly. I tested it thoroughly! I consider this solved!
