I just got my first iPad (Verizon) and have 2 questions on data usage
1. If I am reading the NY Times (using there app) am I using data for so long as I am reading it or is it downloaded into my iPad (or usage only when page changed?).

2. How can I determine how much data I have used?

3. Can I inadvertantly use data if the cover is on but there is push information I signed up for (or location services?).
4.Do people turn data off except when actually on web etc. 2G could be burned quickly otherwise. NOt sure how you download a movie etc.

Reading a stagnant page you've already downloaded doesn't cost you anymore data.

2. How can I determine how much data I have used?

Go to Settings > General > Usage and scroll down to Cellular Data. Add the two in/out numbers together.

Yes. The cover being closed merely turns off the backlight, doesn't shut the iPad down. Go to Settings > Notifications and turn off the unnecessary ones.

If you turn off data, you're not going to get push email or iMessages either. It's a mobile device, many of the best features are data related.
