Data usage while connected to wifi?

I have a Verizon 4s and noticed the data slowly creeping up while having wifi connected the whole day at home. In a matter of about 20 min it went from 17.6 to 17.8 I know it's a small amount but it was also in a short amount of time

iPhones do not stay on wifi when in sleep/standby mode unless charging.

Do you do the update from Verizon? Mine did the same thing until the update. Works perfect now with no data usage on WIFI.
