Date and Time in Messages App?

How does the app pick which messages to put the date and time above? I know it will if it is the first message to or from that person in a while, but it will do it in the middle of a conversation sometimes

On mine it appears to show up on the first message sent after :00 and :30 on the hour.

If there are enough texts in a thread, it'll split it every 15 minutes. I usually use up around 400 texts per day, and I think it's around 5-7 texts for it to start splitting by 15 minutes. Otherwise it'll split less often.
