Popular journaling app Day One today updated to version 4.13, adding support for trackpad navigation on iPad, a new Day View interface, and other improvements.

day-one-app.jpg

This release comes after the launch of iOS and iPadOS 13.4, which added support for trackpads and mice on ?iPad?.

After updating, Day One users on iPad can use various trackpad actions to interact with the app, including two-finger swipe down to dismiss, and two-finger horizontal swipe to open and close the journal drawer.
The new Day View offers quicker access to daily entries by tapping on or clicking dates in the calendar or the timeline.

Also in this update, Daily Reminders now include additional information like the number of photos taken and locations visited on a given day, and the Settings pages now provide links to Day One feature documents.

Elsewhere, several bugs have been fixed, including one that caused video thumbnails not to display in the media timeline, and one that prevented photos in the activity feed from showing location or calendar events.

Day One is a free download for iPhone and iPad from the App Store with in-app purchases for premium features. [Direct Link]

Love this app and it is a subscription that I don't mind paying for at all. I have close to 7,000 entries now dating back to 11 years ago and spread out over 13 different journals. Love it.

Did it fix the issue where basic things like dark mode and adding journals requires a monthly subscription?
Seriously? A Subscription is only $35 a year which breaks down to less than $3 a month. It's a great journal app.

Day One is a fantastic app. I used to keep entries about things I did on vacation, lectures I saw, what we did on our anniversary, etc., in a Word file, but that doesn't show you where you were on a map, or what the weather was at the time, or what you did that day in previous years, or do a lot of things that Day One does so well.

I was a little hesitant when they went subscription, but it's an app I use almost every day, and whenever I report a problem or make a suggestion, I get a reply within a day if not within hours. Support is great. For whatever reason, I got locked in at the lower subscription price of $25 a year, which I don't mind paying at all.

It doesn't matter if it's $0.99 a year. They converted an app they already sold as a one time price into a subscription platform. IOS apps are not the same as desktop apps. You can't just slap a 2 on it and claim it requires another purchase. There was no additional expense for adding Dark Mode because they had already promised feature updates when they originally listed the app. The cost of that development should have been accounted for in their price.

What is their justification for needing recurring revenue on a text editor? Providing proprietary cloud storage? Continued support? They could have just added the ability to export and save to icloud or one of the dozen of existing cloud storage services. They could develop a new app that justifies another purchase.

It is simple. They fleeced their early adopters. They could have added their proprietary cloud service as an IAP, and than developed a service that outperforms other options, but they didn't.

And before you throw the 'entitled' word about, you should know that yes, we are entitled to feature updates and bug fixes on software I purchased that promised feature updates and bug fixes. We shouldn't have to pay them over and over to fix their software.

I don’t subscribe. I can add new journals and dark mode works for me.

You can have multiple journals and dark mode without paying?! That makes their pricing page confusing as it specifically says you have to subscribe to get those 'features'.

It's a great app that's ruined by subscriptions.

At least with 1password, you can avoid their subscriptions if you want to. The subscription actually adds benefits but you can absolutely stick to the classic model of paying decent prices for substantial upgrades, and get support for your current product for a fair amount of time. At least its that way for now... I will be switching if they go to a subscriber-only model.

I still use DayOne, but only on the iPhone and iPad. They still sync up. I'm not using proprietary cloud storage either. I already have stuff in iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive. I don't need another when any of those would be suitable.

I'd gladly pay $20-$50 every two or three years for certain apps I use a lot. Or less for incremental upgrades. I'm all about continued payment for continued development - but not on a subscription model.

It is an iOS and Mac app.

While I’m not sure about the technical details, no other journaling app I’ve found is a one time purchase. And Day One looks better than all of them. I don’t like subscriptions, but Day One is too good to pass.

That being said, it’s a disaster that I can’t use a passcode that’s longer than 4 digits. Anyone is 4 digits away from the most personal app in my device.

And I should have the option to change the color of the “all entries” journal from black to whatever I want.

Nice app... BUT (!!):

Day One has already caused me a lot of headaches because the developers are so stubborn not to build in an optional 'Want to save?'. Really annoying, have already lost hundreds (!!!) of unique photo opportunities. Hateful !!
If you happen to swiped up - app closed and photos not saved away. But also (!) often that it just does not save the photos (despite being saved right before closing the app) and also frequently that when turning the iPhone from portrait to landscape, Day One closes itself and gone is the photo-entry. Now, this is the second iPhone (first a X - now 11 Pro Max) , with a different app-setup. So this is simply not possible !!! Also, the sync is really not working ok since a week. The photos from the iPhone only appear in the MacOS version after a day.
For the sake of safety, I currently also save the photos in the camera roll and add them in Day One afterwards, but this really cannot be the intention.

And as for that fantastic support, mentioned above: when I report the problem after several times (I have been a high-end IT professional for 30+ years), they say they do not understand or ...no answer! This kind of nonsense with this acclaimed app should stop. Many photo-moments are lost forever. Even the very first programs had a "Save?" option to exit...

I dare not leave this app open for a while to add photos later in the same entry, because they are almost always gone in the meantime. As a result, all entries that should actually belong in 1 entry. If a person is not yet able to count on this in a reliable way, I think there is something fundamentally wrong.

I’m still using the original pre subscription version and it’s all I need. Still works with iCloud sync on the latest iOS and iPadOS.

Like others here I hate subscription-based apps, particularly as many seemed to use the switch to a subscription-based model as way of hiking up their prices.
However Day One is an app I use pretty much everyday and to me that makes it worthwhile. Ultimately I believe people need to get get paid for their work (and then it's down to the individual to decide if the price being asked is worth the service being delivered).

If you bought the previous Day One 2 app before they started subscription, you’re able to add multiple journals without paying. It’s called the Day One Plus (grandfathered version)

See this link: https://help.dayoneapp.com/en/articles/1045018-day-one-pricing-features-guide

I bought it before and I’m still able to use without paying but can only add 10 photos and no videos.

They offered the $25/yr for the people who bought the old app but when I tried to subscribe to that offered, it has already expired because they only offered it for 2 yrs I think. Since I don’t use it much and mostly use it for when I travel, I just make do with the plus version. I only add photos from my camera roll and only those that I want to remember.

Hoping they will lower subscription prices or offer discounts. 😆

That’s ridiculous. It’s bad enough to force a subscription on people who already paid, but then limiting what people who are paying a subscription can do just to get them to move to a higher tier yearly rate?

They are not forcing a subscription. The level that he is at is what the level was prior to the subscription. People who had already purchased the app kept what they paid for and they had 2 years to get the special subscription price. This user did not accept the offer in that timeframe, therefor should they wish to subscribe it would be at the current regular rate. When the subscription model was adopted subscribers got new features and benefits, if you chose to subscribe you got them, if you didn't you stayed where you were.

The issue is that the app was sold with the expectation of getting updates, but the developer decided to charge customers again by telling them they needed to pay more to get the updates they already paid for. That’s forcing a subscription. In addition their price was only for two years and it seems they saw the price increased more than once else the features they paid for were removed.

I've been using DayOne since the it was released on the iPhone. I use it everyday as my journal/diary app. When they went to the subscription, I didn't immediately sign up. But I eventually signed up for the subscription to lock in the $25 renewal rate. If you didn't sign up during the promo period, yes the price went up. You were given the option to either sign up or you could continue using the app at the then current version. Prior to that you had to pay every time they had a major update. So I don't see where the developer did anything wrong here. You want new updates and features, guess what, you have to pay for it. I bought a 2019 car in late 2018. The car company just updated the navigation system, I have 2 choices 1. I can pay the update fee of $25 and get an SD card with the update and install it, or I can 2. Not pay for the update and have the older maps in the cars system and plug in my iPhone and use Apple Maps via CarPlay for the updated maps. Similar situation here, you can either pay and updated and new features, or not pay and use the same old software. Just because you bought an app it does not mean you get to use it, get new updates and new features forever.

Which is reasonable because you already purchased it.

But I eventually signed up for the subscription to lock in the $25 renewal rate.
So you purchased it again because you wanted to spend more?

If you didn't sign up during the promo period, yes the price went up.
The cost went up because the promotional period existed.

You were given the option to either sign up or you could continue using the app at the then current version.
Which is different than the original agreement where the developer uses the money they already took to provide promised updates.

Prior to that you had to pay every time they had a major update.
False. Prior to this there was no paid updates.

So I don't see where the developer did anything wrong here.
They promised their $5 iOS app and $10 MacApp would be the last journal app you would need to buy. They promised that with a one time purchase you could document and record the moments over your lifetime. The app was expected to get at least 10 to 20 years of support.

You want new updates and features, guess what, you have to pay for it.
I did. That's the issue.

Did they disclose this at TOP or did they promise you updates as part as your purchase price and then decide after you made a huge investment that they would change their pricing structure? Cause that's what DayOne did.

Similar situation here,
Not a all.

you can either pay and updated and new features, or not pay and use the same old software.
I already paid, so yeah, I expect access to the new features.

Just because you bought an app it does not mean you get to use it, get new updates and new features forever.
It does if that's exactly what they sold.

What DayOne promised early on wasn't sustainable for their current ambitions. Today's business needs doesn't change how they originally positioned their product. They should honor their promises and provide updates to people who purchased the app and helped them become the notable journal app they became. Instead they screwed over their early customers like a shady Kickstarter so they could use their size and name recognition to charge customers more.

Look, I think the subscription model for this type of product is abusive and unnecessary but we wouldn't be having this conversation if they initially sold that. They didn't. They sold a lifetime of updates and support for a flat price and then reneged on that offer. Since they couldn't offer 'upgrades' they simply abandoned the old app and launched the exact same program with a new AppID and a subscription price.

I think the Day One version 2 app was originally 10 photos only with no videos. I don’t mind the plus version because they really didn’t change anything and I’m still able to use it the same way as when I bought it. At least they still fix the bugs. I wish they would add the dropbox sync again though. Or icloud sync to Files.

For now, it’s still the best journal app I’ve use. I just don’t use it much for the price they’re asking. Hopefully something better would come along that’s not subscription.
