Day One, a popular journaling app for iOS, has received a number of new features to go with a visual overhaul inspired by iOS 7, including support for the 64-bit A7 processor and M7 motion coprocessor found in the iPhone 5s, the ability to add information about a currently playing music track to an entry, and general performance improvements.

Love this app, and the updates are nice, but it really needs to have better encryption and the ability to support more than one journal on Mac and iOS to be the definitive product in this space.

Been using this app since it's inception and it just keeps getting better and better. I would highly recommend this app to anyone that wants to keep journal or diary.

I now have close to 4 years worth of daily entries and sometimes enjoy going back and reading what my thoughts were a a few years ago and see how much my perspective on things has changed over the years. In addition it's also fun to relive some of the moments I wrote about. Maybe someday will write a book on some of the crazy, and stupid, things I've seen guests do, or try to do, in my line of work as guest relations host at a major resort.

That actually gives me a lot of perspective as to whether I want to buy it or not. I've been thinking about a journal app to log my thoughts as I tend to have so many of them, but the appeal of this to me has fluctuated. I think the idea of using it to write how you feel and look back days/months/years from now is an awesome thing! :)

As someone who bought this in January, I can say this app is one of the best journaling apps available. It's so good, I had to buy the Mac version for longer entries and I love both. This update is very polished and the M7 features are simply icing on the cake.

Do yourself a favor if you don't own this app and would like to start journaling. Buy it. Now.

For anyone wondering what the benefits are of journaling everyday I can speak to one:

Every day, in the morning or night before, I log my goals for the day. For example: get x-project accomplished. Then at the end of the day I write down the results, why, and my thoughts. Essentially I analyze my performance and ability to achieve my day goals. First, it forces me to consciously choose a purpose for the day (goal). Then by analyzing my accomplishments and failures, I observe and assess the flaws in my behavior. This forces me to confront a more accurate reality vs the illusion in my head. For example: sometimes I think I have more time, energy, opportunity than I really have. Sometimes my goals are to big. Sometimes I fail because I spend too much time browsing the web. And sometimes I have issues with other people that compromise me emotionally, deflating my motivation. Whatever the case, if benefits to confront those realities. When you see it written down, you then ask yourself, "What am I going to do about it?"

Interesting to me how this update borrows the visual aesthetics from Vesper. Yes, Day One had tags before Vesper came out, but the redesign uses the same rounded tags and the same dark-blue colour scheme as Vesper, significantly different from the iOS 6 version of Day One.

Regarding encryption:

Isn't there encryption built-in? (I thought there was an option to passcode-protect the entire app. And if you're using Touch ID or a passcode on your phone, doesn't that mean no one can read your entries anyway?)

I think what people mean are the actual entries. They're stored as plain text files that can be opened outside of the app.

What you said!

The entries are in plain text in XML files.. so if you sync to dropbox or icloud they can be read by anyone. A passcode to access the app, and encryption to secure the files/entries is completely different unfortunately..

Just a little bit of clarification encryption, as I think some of the earlier comments oversimplified things a bit.

It is correct that Day One lacks encryption and stores entries as plain text. These can be read outside the App. If you are concerned about this, you can easily turn on Filevault on your Mac and set a strong login password. This way no one can read your notes except you.

On the Dropbox/iCloud side, it's really not true to say anyone can read your entries. Dropbox and iCloud both encrypt your data as soon as it leaves your computer. All data is stored on their servers in an encrypted format. Whether you trust the service or not is a separate issue, but accessing your journal entries is not trivial and certainly not achievable by 'anyone'.

If Day One added encryption, it would be a second level of security on top of the existing options - nice to have sure. But I hope the points above show the current implementation is actually pretty good security wise.

Day One and data

Well whatever the designers of Day One where thinking, but it may be too late. After upgrading to maverick. Day One forgot where it store its data on syncing, hence it erased data on the device and wanted to sync old data from iCloud. I used dropbox, which was no issues until the update. Once the update, you had to drop you dropbox folder in utilizing to relink. Of course this did not work and the out was almost of year of data was erased. Can't recreate because it seems whatever was in iCloud takes priority over the device. So time machine did not help. Oh. tech support that happening. Read the reviews on iTunes and see how other have had the same issues.

This app is amazing, glad to see the update out. Can't wait to use it on the Mac as well.

This. I'd like to have multiple journals, but Day One (I use on iMac, iPhone, iPad) refuses to do this. I'd like to have one for family, personal, photography, but oh well.

I LOVE Day One! The new update is absolutely stunning.

Here's a question though. Since all these apps are releasing features to work with the M7 coprocessor... How is this going to work when you have multiple apps using it at the same time? Isn't that going to drain the battery?

If only they would encrypt the journal entries.. anyone can read your stuff...

Who is this anyone you are referring to? NSA or your family? I mean if it's prying eyes on your iPad At the basic level, isn't that what the password is for?

Edit, OK I see what most people are referring to. I don't have anyone in my family techy enough to know what that xml file is and where to look to begin with. I use dropbox but it's only on my dedicated personal computers

Been using this app since 2011... definitely the most polished app i've ever used for that works across all of my apple devices.

Anyone getting the Steps feature to work?
It's missing from my entries in Day One. I have allowed day one to get motion sensor data.

When you create an entry (or edit one for that matter), scroll through right above the keyboard and click on your steps. This will input the steps into your journal entry.
