Days to Sync in Mail (OS X)

I want to sync my hotmail and gmail, but the MAIL app tried to download everything (>3GB). How can I set the time to sync, e.g., 30 days to sync?

I don't know about Hotmail, but with GMail you can go to your settings at gmail.com and in the IMAP section limit folders to a certain amount of messages.

Also, go to the labels tab and turn off sync of the IMAP All Mail folder as this is a duplicate of all the other folder in GMail and results in double the download for each message.

Nope... everything will still be on gmail.com, they just won't get downloaded to Mail on OS X. The limit just applies to IMAP clients.
