Well I searched a few threads but could not really find a solution.In the settings>mail,contacts and calendars>I could not see the option for my gmail account where we can select 'mail days to sync',the option does show up for my outlook account,any specific reason why it does not or way to enable this option ? By the way,it is an iPhone 5-if it is relevant here.Thanks.

Sorry for sounding dumb,but how do I exactly know how it is set up ? I use add account,and then select gmail from there,not the Mircorosft Exchange option if that is what you meant.
I would follow this guide to setup your GMail account it'll use Exchange. The lack of "days to sync" option leads me to believe you have it setup through IMAP.
