Deactivate 3GS without Jailbreaking or restoring.

Hey all, I got a text saying my 3GS can now be unlock from O2-UK, but I don't want to restore and loose all my stuff, and it is on 5.1 and don't want a tethered jailbreak, can I go through redsn0w and click deactivate without clicking install cydia, or will that still jailbreak it tethered? (little bit of a n00b in this particular area)
