Deactivated iphone help

i tried to update a deactivated 1st gen iphone to the 2.0.1 version but now the phone doesnt work like it normally should. the charging process never gets fully charged. the phone restarts at random times. when looking at the system it still says 1.1.4. there is no sim card for it since it was given to me just as a present since they bought the new 3g version. is there anyone that can help me determine how to get the iphone to work properly again. the wifi doesnt work and the battery drains incredibly fast. thanks
