I've got a dead 8800GT and OSX will not boot up (windows 7 will in VGA)

Question...how do you install the 285gtx's drivers into OSX if they in fact must be installed before you can plug in the card?

I live in a remote location with no fellow mac pro users to borrow a card.

I don't know that you can. I know when I would try to boot from the OSX DVD to re-install leopard with the GTX285 installed it would cause a big ole' kernel panic. Maybe something remotely...a laptop? I'm strictly guessing. I'm gonna google a little and see if I can help. :)

What about this ???

"u can install 285, startup osx into single user mode

then do this commands:

mount -uw /

rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/NVDA*

then u can reboot and get osxto output in vesa/uga mode, then u can install drivers "

sounds like Netkas words from another thread.

why not try holding the "shift" key at boot first

simpler and may very well work with a dying 8800GT

Shift key Safe mode doesn't work. Delay, then "Bad Boy, turn off machine" message.

No extra mac around to boot from.

Doesn't seem like such an unusual scenario. Old card dies, buy new one, whadaya know. Can't install it and apple doesn't tell you how. Hmmmmm.....
