Epic Games launched its mobile store for iPhone and iPad in the EU last year, and it has since established a popular program of weekly game giveaways. This week, it is making one of the most awarded indie action games of recent years free to download for a limited time.

Dead Cells is an action-platformer from developer Motion Twin that combines elements of traditional side-scrolling combat with roguelike design. Players explore a procedurally generated castle, where levels, enemy placements, and rewards change with each run.

The game is known for its responsive combat, permanent progression mechanics, and branching level paths that unlock over time. Its pixel-art presentation and soundtrack have been lauded by critics, and regular post-launch updates have expanded the game with new content, keeping players coming back for more.

Epic has reported that hundreds of millions of free games have been redeemed on its store. If you're in the EU and haven't taken advantage of previous Epic Games store giveaways, grabbing a free copy of Dead Cells is, by all accounts, a good way to start. The offer ends on December 18, and you'll need to create an Epic account if you don't already have one.

The ‌Epic Games‌ Store for iOS is only available in the European Union right now because alternative app stores and distribution methods are not allowed in other countries.

I’ve clicked the link but it brings me to an X post… do I have to install anything on my iPhone? And yes, I’m in Europe.

PS: I usually don’t play in my iPhone. I guess the Dead Cells download will also be available for iPad, right?

For the record, I don't regret buying this game. On PC though (yes, Macs are Personal Computers). No idea how the mobile port fares.

Epic Games giving away free games? I was told by countless MR users that app developers looking to bypass Apple's app store and/or their payment system was nothing more than a trick to line their pockets, and that the end user would in no way see any benefit from it. What is this madness?

Which doesn't cost money ... so still free actually.
however this Epic app store seems be down
tried to get to it via their QR code... nada

whatever... this is what you get with these alt app stores... maybe it works, maybe it doesnt
people dont even know what even installing on your system / phone whatever

the point of the central app store was to provide some level of guidance / protection
not saying that was / is perfect but to go around it completely ... you are asking for other problems

A big thing about alt stores, at least on the Android side, is that if you give them permission to install things, that's a one time permission, not something you redo every single time they decide they want to install things on your device. So you could find people paying alt stores to install their junk software behind your back.

You can see something like this this already in action on Android phones that come pre-loaded with not only garbage programs, but services installed at the factory or by the cell provider that sold you the phone, that exist only to let them install more from third parties at their whim, until you find them and disable them. (You can't uninstall some of these pre-installed services, just disable them, so they can't keep adding more things to your phone.) You look down at your phone and suddenly there's some icon for a bubble maze game or photo ai avatar creator or "news" service you never asked for.

Good to know. Not sure when it will be available worldwide. Might consider trying it out then.
