Dead G4 hard drive

Trying to gather the data off of a friend's old silver G4, unfortunately the drive works when it damn well feels like it, so it wont boot except from the Tiger DVD.

Anyhow, is there any way I can grab the data and put it onto my external or my MacBook Pro, by only booting from the DVD?

You should be able to mount it on a different computer and access it like a normal external drive if you have an old IDE enclosure. That's what I'd do anyway.
