Dead g4. Need HD files

Have a g3 w/ g4 sonnet upgrade that died. I need the files from the HD. I pulled the HD connected a usb to ide or sata adapter and plugged into my mac pro. It doesn't mount on the desktop and I get a popup saying in can't read, but gives me the option to initualize it. I did and it shows in disk utility as a HD but is grey. Any ideas. I thought about buying data rescue II but would think there's a free solution.

Don't initialize it.

First, I would try a difference external enclosure. Could be the USB/IDE adaptor isn't working well.

If you need recovery, then you're probably best going with DataRescue.
