My friend has an iPhone 3gs that is completely dead. Won't power on, itunes won't see it, etc.... I'm pretty sure it's the logic board because he plugged it into a 3rd party car charger and the screen immediately went off and it hasn't powered up since.

I told him he could pay the 200 out of warranty fee to get it replaced but he asked if he turns the dead phone in to Apple is there any data on it that could potentially be maliciously recovered (email, SMS, etc...)

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8H7 Safari/6533.18.5)

Tell your friend not to worry. Apple has very stict policies on used items and data.
