My iPhone 6s+ is completely dead. I've riced it for 50+ hours and I get nothing when I attempt to start it or do a hard restart. It was exposed to enough water Monday to soak both ends of a Q-tip. It was in a quad-seal lanyard pouch that I've used a dozen or so times before without fail. Either I somehow didn't seal it or the thing developed a leak.

I had no plans to replace it - I was fine with it. But I'll either get another one like it or try to find a 7+ (though the airpod thing I'm not so sure about).

What would you do: Grin and bear it for ~5 days to see what the used market does? Or just get it now? (If it matters, I'm on T-Mobile and plan to stay due to our plan.)

Thanks

You sir have the perfect excuse for a new phone! Unfortunately, given the predicted release of the phone for purchase is not next Tuesday, but next next Friday.... you've got 15 days to wait...

Actually, depending on the model and IF available stock is even existent, it very could easily much longer than September 22.

Depends on three things:
1. Do you want the latest iPhone, if so next Tuesday is the unveiling and then probably 10 days after that is the launch, so a wait is inevitable.
2. Do you buy it outright or have a contract/payment plan, if it's the latter then try to take an upgrade?
3. If you buy outright then do you want to pay full Apple retail price for the latest iPhone 8/8 plus/Edition or are you happy picking up a "bargain" when a lot of people sell their current iPhone to fund the latest release. The used market has a lot of bargains around this time.

Buy a used SE and resell it. You’ll be able sell it around the same price you bought it for.

I dropped my iPhone at Huntington Beach over Labor Day weekend but someone turned it in at the bar I was at. Got lucky !

Wait for the new iPhone and get the used SE to get you by then sell it.

I'd wait until the announcement before committing any serious money to a new phone.

Buy some POS handset to tide you over until you know what is going on with this year's iphone release. If nothing else, once the new model is announced the current model prices will either drop or the spec will improve for the same price. i.e., even if you decide to buy a 7, you'll get one cheaper or get better spec for same price in a couple of weeks.

Others would love a considerate 6S+ phone like yours, deciding to cark it within a week of a new iPhone release.

If you have the money, do the blindingly obvious & sane thing - wait a few days before your 6S+ is superseded for a second (& potentially 3rd time with the Pro/Edition) & snap up a latest & greatest smart phone on release.

If your iPhone is out of service you can buy another one from Apple and have 14 days to return it and have full refund.
I'm not sure you'll be able to get the brand new iPhone before the end of the month, but if you opt for the 7s you may be able to get in on the 22th so just in time, or you can find out you're not interested in the new iPhones, return the new one and buy something else, like a 7. You should find good deals next week after the announcement

The above comment is reasonable. I recommend OP follows the advice.

I am in sort of the same situation, I have decided to wait until next week when I assume the 7+ will be reduced in price.

That's what I'm hoping for - a drop in the 7+ or reductions on the secondary market (e.g. Swappa).

I bought the 6s+ a year ago this month for $300 (64GB mint) and was thrilled at the deal, expecting it to last 2-3 years before iOS crippled it down the road. Instead, it turned out to be a-dollar-a-day phone because my $5 plastic pouch had a tiny leak.

My instinct was to wait, but sometimes there's someone with a good reason to not wait. Thanks for the advice. (My New iMac fund is about to be sacked. I was saving up to replace my 10 year old iMac AL from mid-2007. Oh well.)

Why would you get one now? Of course if you go through someone like Verizon you have 14 days to change your mind.

Apple Store might give you up to $260 towards a new phone. Just don't mention water damage unless its clearly shows.

They gave me $260 my 6s+, the phone was kind of working, it was severely draining the battery.

UPDATE: IT'S NOT DEAD!!! IT'S NOT DEAD!!!
I took it into a local repair shop that offered to test it for no charge. The said the inside was fine - they didn't think it had ANY water damage. Instead, the screen needed to be replaced and doing so made it work just fine. The repair was $80.

Lesson learned: Check it before you chuck it. And don't skimp on water protection for your devices. A new $20 pack thingy would've saved me a lot of trouble.

Why did you have to ruin the perfect excuse to get the brand new iPhone ?!?! ;)

Glad it's fine :)

Where is the poll??

If you don't mind dealing with craigslist and if you want/need a phone now, but want to order the next BIG THING, I would recomend buying a used one (like a 5S) or some other model for around $100-$150. The good thing about a craigslist deal is that you can check it out before buying. Meet your seller in a public place like Starbucks and insist on putting your sim card in the phone to try it out before paying.

After getting your new phone, assuming you're going to buy a new one that will be announced Sept 12th, you should be able to sell your temp phone for about what you paid for it. If you're NOT going to get one of the new phones coming out, you should strongly consider buying a later version (IP7, IP6S or IP6).
