dead pixel advice needed

hi I have a dead pixel in the middle of my screen on a 3G. I phoned apple and they advised me to do a reinstall to factory settings for this to fix it. now I always thought that a dead pixel was a fault in the screen not software related. I only noticed it today when I opened up my email and you see a black dot on the white background in the middle of the screen. my phone is a 3G on 3.1.2 JB using blackrain.
