My powerbook G4 has just died and I need some advice on possible solutions.

I've seen other posts on this subject. But they don't seem quite the same as my experience. I've tried to be as precise as I can with my descriptions of what's happened.

To start with the powerbook battery hasn't worked for at least a year. It will not recharge anymore and will only run the powerbook for about 2 minutes before dying. However it did run off the mains adapter without any problems. So that was fine. However things have got progressively worse over the past few weeks.

Since about 2 weeks ago the laptop would boot successfully. Then after a apparently random amount of time (between 2 and 20 minutes) the screen would flicker on and off for a couple of seconds then computer would die.

Since yesterday I have not been able to get the computer to boot at all. I plug the power cable in and the orange charge light comes on. after about a second the charge light goes off. The light cannot be made to come on again unless you turn the power adapter off at the mains. Simply unplugging it from the laptop and plugging in again does nothing. The laptop wont boot. And you cant hear any HD noises when you try to start it up. I have bought a new power adapter thinking it was that. But it's made no difference.

I've read on some forums that it's possible the battery is now so dead that it won't allow the computer to run off the mains and that replacing it might solve the problem.

However I've also read that the laptop should run off the mains fine without the battery installed. Which it doesn't.

Can anyone give me any advice? Right now if I remove the battery and connect to the mains the laptop will not start. Should I be able to start it without the battery? Would buying a new battery help? Or is this something more serious?

Any assistance greatly appreciated. Thanks!
