My old PowerBook G3 screen is (almost totally) dead - we can only see the top toolbar, but the rest is a psychedelic colorful display... I would like to recuperate the files that are still in there. I have tried to get "inside" using our Ethernet network, but it's not working since we can't remember the old laptop's password. We have tried to connect it to an external LCD, which is partly working as the LCD displays the Mac screen, but nothing else.

I have also tried to connect a keyboard and mouse to the laptop, and then close the lid to get it to sleep, and then to tap a key to get it back to life, hoping the LCD would take charge instead of the laptop's screen, but it's not working. It stays asleep...

How can I get the LCD to display the laptop's desktop?
