Dead strip at botton only on texting/email app

I have an original iDay iPhone with 2.2.1 and when I go to write a text or email, the bottom row of keys are unresponsive and often type the letter above the one I am touching. All other apps seem to work fine when touching the lower strip of the screen. What can I do to fix this?
