I have trouble when I have two browsers open. (Chrome and Stainless). If I go past more than 3 or 4 browsers on Chrome, Chrome starts to become unreponsive and lags. So what I could do is keep on closing Stainless and then reopening it whenever I need it back again. I would have no problem doing this only if reoopening part was very easy. But I have to actually aim and click on the icon which to me is cumbersome.

Is there a way to set up a shortcut that brings up certain apps without you having to click on them? I guess spotlight is convenient enough but a shortkey would be better.

Alfred might be able to help.

Anyway, it is strange, that you encounter that problem with 4 GB of RAM.

Have a look at Activity Monitor (Applications / Utilities /) and select All Processes and sort by CPU to see what the culprit may be.
Also check the "System Memory" tab to see what your "Page ins:", "Page outs:" and "Swap used:" are.

image below uses sorting by CPU as an example
