Earlier this week we shared a deal on the 32GB Apple TV 4K, which is on sale for $119.99, down from $179.00, and today Amazon has introduced a deal on the 64GB model as well. It's available for $139.99, down from $199.00.

In terms of past sales, both of these prices are second-best discounts for the Apple TV 4K and just about $10 higher than the all-time low discounts. Although the 32GB model has a slight shipping delay of about a week, the 64GB model is in stock and ready to ship today.

The new 2021 models of the Apple TV 4K include the redesigned Siri Remote, an A12 Bionic processor, and 4K high frame rate HDR support.

I ordered the $119 earlier this week.

So...what does the Apple TV do that my Roku Stick doesn't?

I doubt your Stick supports AirPlay, beyond that it'll likely run everything with less lag and can play some App Store games, if you're so inclined.

There may be more, I've never been able to justify buying one, especially since my TV supports AirPlay natively.

While I guess the chassis wasn't refreshed in Spring 2021 and the hardware was only a refresh, it would seem odd to me that we're going to see an updated ATV this fall. Most ATV updates were 3-4 years apart, and even then, with minor updates. Given the discounts from Apple and other retailers though, it seems like we may see a Fall update though.

The stick does support Airplay actually.

What the ATV will do is be a faster, less buggy, less ad filled, better app experience. Also it can be a home hub for Homekit. Easy way to display pictures from Photo Library.

Just try them side by side. You’ll see. As with a lot of Apple things it’s hard to describe to people (who often are already skeptical) why it’s so much better if they haven’t tried it.

If you have a HomePod you can use that as your main speaker and bark a few basic commands at it to control your ATV, like pause, play, turn off, etc.

You can also access your music library and photos so there’s some iCloud integration. Lastly you can access your iTunes content including purchased and ripped content. I digitized my entire dvd/blu-ray collection.

ATV is not a must have, and honestly, Apple should be licensing this tech, but if you have money to waste and you’re in the ecosystem, then there are a couple of perks.

I’m keeping an eye on the price at Amazon UK, unfortunately no deals this side of the pond, best option is the refurb store.

Because my relatives keep raving about their Apple TV
What did they say? Whatever they said was enough you to buy one but you still don’t know why?

Like most Apple products the benefit is being in the Apple ecosystem. If that’s not that important to you then you probably should return it. Streaming devices have evolved to a commodity. Meaning at this point they all basically do the same things. One may have a minor (imho) feature that another does not, and the other may have it’s own unique features, but the are not vast differences.

I wasn’t even sure this was a genuine question, since people usually value the opinion of their relatives much more than strangers on the Internet.

Actually looking to by a used model because I think the new remote sucks… mostly due to fast forwarding in YouTubeTV.
What's wrong with the fast forwarding? Honest question because I don't own the new remote.

IMO the older touchpad remote sucks. My favourite AppleTV remote that I've used was the prior one to that with no touchpad, but the OS was designed differently then. I can still use the old non-touchpad remote with my Apple TV 4K (A10X version) now with current versions of tvOS, but the fast forwarding is too slow since these newer versions of the OS aren't really designed with that old remote in mind.

I’m curious if anyone has tried using one of these models with either the olde-timey ACD30 (+ all the adapters to get hdmi in), or a newer but 21:9 LG curved ultrawide job. Since the Atv3 used to work with them (until Apple decided to delete that compatibility in an update), I wonder if they’ve just broken it in the model 3 only, or in TVos in total forevermore.

Not overheat for one in the summer. I've found the Roku Sticks to be significantly slow and less reliable with apps in comparison to the Apple TV 4K. (Hulu seems to be the only app that's questionably iffy across several devices)

The Roku Ultra on the other hand is rather fast, but still not as fast as the Apple TV 4K.

I will say, the find my remote feature on the Roku is better than having to cough up extra money for an AirTag / AirTag Remote Case.
