The Apple Pencil 2 is compatible with the following iPads: iPad mini (6th generation), iPad Air (4th generation and later), 12.9-inch iPad Pro (3rd generation and later), and 11-inch iPad Pro (1st generation and later). The second generation Apple Pencil can also magnetically attach and pair to the iPad Pro, iPad mini, and iPad Air.

If you have the newest iPad Pro models, the second-generation Apple Pencil can now be detected while hovering up to 12mm above the display. This allows users to see a preview of their drawing before they make it, and with Scribble, text fields automatically expand when the pencil gets near the screen.

I buy the $24 one off Amazon for use in the cockpit. Writing down weather, clearances, and notations on my flight charts. Can tell zero difference between it and the apple one. So $85 for a pencil isn’t some amazingly generous gift from Apple.

What is the one that you bought? I would rather spend $25 than $89

If you're scribbling notes, it won't matter getting the cheaper one.
I think the benefits of the Apple Pencil really only come into play if you need pressure sensitive drawing apps.

Lowest price ever but it’s been this price a lot this year… I just bought one on Amazon last week for $89. is this not the same deal?

What if for the third generation pen they did something like the digital equivalent of an old-school click pen with multiple colored switches on the sides? It could be a pen and a pencil and a marker. It could even be a fountain pen all in one, and then Apple could charge even more for it. And if maybe for an extra bit of added fun and profit Apple could sell pen refills. But they should be digital refills. Kind of like an NFT where you don’t really get anything but you get to use it sorta, and it runs out so you can buy more.

I wonder if this is a sign there will be an Apple Pencil 3 to accommodate a landscape camera on the next iPad Pro?

I returned my apple pencil 2 waiting for the apple pencil 3, hopefully any time soon.
Bear in mind that just like how you can’t pair, charge, and use the Pencil-2 on Pencil-1 iPads, you may not be able to use the Pencil-3 on your Pencil-2 iPad. Especially if they change/move the charger and magnets to work with landscape cameras.

I’ve been using the Kindle Scribe lately, the button on that stylus is so useful, it makes the fiddly tap gesture on the Apple Pencil look really poor in comparison.

Apple badly need to up their game on the pencil and make it much easier to switch between tools. Something like a button to bring up a radial selector like selecting a weapon in video games would be ideal.

I think the Apple Pencil is due for an upgrade. The current version is good but certainly can see the following improvements:
1. A different kind of tip so the taps aren't so clickety and so there's just a little but more resistance when gliding across glass
2. The backend of the pencil should provide a third function, such as erase. Modifying the backend of the pencil so that it can be a third tool (e.g., erase, blur, highlight marker) would make the pencil much more functional. For instance, when I read books I often like to rotate between a line marker (e.g., pencil or pen) and a highlighter. But, I also need an erase function. The current version can only accommodate 2 tools of any kind at the same time without me needing to further interact with the software outside of the pencil.
3. Optional: a switch to turn off the pencil. There are long periods of time when I do not need to use the pencil and what happens is its battery keeps draining as it is constantly bluetooth connected to the iPad. Yes, it takes but a few minutes to charge the pencil to a point when it can be used, but why allow the pencil to cycle up and down reducing overall life if an on/off switch can be had? Besides, those who don't want to use an on/off switch can simply keep it on all the time.

You can easily switch between tools, but only between two tools. You do this by double tapping the barrel. I agree that we need to be able to switch between more than 2 tools though.
