While our 2009 MBP is still running along flawlessly with more RAM and an SSD, I have to figure it might just die (or be arbitrarily obsoleted) soon, so thanks to MR for keeping these sales on the front page.

Plus, $200 savings is plenty of money for a reliable external keyboard.

Why are these sales so often only for the anemic 128GB storage version? As someone who requires an absolute minimum of 512GB in a laptop, I feel like I can't get a good deal.

We rarely have deals or rebates on Macs in Canada. And on the rare occasions that we do, it's always a tiny amount. :(

I find it funny that I am seeing on MR advertisements for Intel's 8th generation i7 processors yet no Macs have them.:(

October. I honestly think that Apple has hesitated because of big change with the quad core i5s with hyper threading. I think there are only 2 suitable Coffeelake i5s for the 13”. This complicates differentiation of the 2 port base with the 4 port real 13” MBP. Less people would pay for an i7 upgrade since the new core i5 is just a little worse than an older i7. I also don’t think that the Y chips for the 12” MacBook are ready.
[doublepost=1530046571][/doublepost]Most PC manufacturers choose one core i5 and one core i7 that they use in almost every configuration. Usually the CPU remains the same while the options are RAM, storage and screen resolution (1080p or 4K). Apple always likes to offer marginally faster CPUs for a few hundred.

Apple needs to design their own chips so that people stop comparing apples to apples. It worked wonders for them in the PowerPC era. It was inevitable that it would happen after adopting Intel. With few exceptions Apple never releases machines right when the new CPUs come out.

Another point: I think it was a mistake for them to refresh the MBPs with Kaby Lake just 7 months after the 2016 models. I was pissed. I got my machine by the end of 11/2016 and to have a $3k machine refreshed so soon sucked but not as much as if it had been CoffeeLake instead of KabyLake which wasn’t that much better than Skylake. They should’ve waited until September. They release one machine per year but since they refreshed them early IMO people are freaking out because the 2018s didn’t launch this month.

At least you can put in more slow storage with a microSD card, which I use for media, backups, and downloads. With the right adaptor, the card will fit in the slot without sticking out at all, so it's basically internal.

Also keeps the main SSD's bandwith and IOPS free for more performance-critical things like my system. Sounds nerdy, but I've had certain operations on the main SSD like verifying a new Xcode XIP slow down my system enough to frustrate any user.

$1100 for the base 13” is a great price. You can buy 500GB Samsung T5 external SSDs (USB-C 3.1 gen 2 10Gbps) for about $130. For those that can get by with 128GB internal, that’s a great price for fast external storage without a dongle! 1TB USB-C 3.1 spinning drives are half that and perform well as long as they’re 7200rpm.

You can just keep apps installed on the internal SSD and have big files for work on external SSDs and 7200rpm drives for music, movies and whatever.

This is a solution to consider. Hell I’m going to order one of these soon.

Yea sounds nerdy. Also the newer macbook's faster storage will win no matter.

2009 MBP can't run the latest version of OS X, the most recent it can run is 10.11 and we are on 10.13 with 10.14 on the way. But still 9 years for a computer is impressive, I made it 8 years with my 2009 machine, it just got painfully slow with the aging C2D compared to the 2011 Sandy Bridge and later models even with 8GB of RAM and an SSD and I wanted to be able to run the latest OS.

2009 core 2 duo macs can run high Sierra

B&H is probably going to take a pretty big hit over the next year or two in loss of business after the Supreme Court ruling on sales tax. Sales tax on computer and photo/video equipment isn't chump change.

Yep. Their service is fine and all but no reason to buy if you are not going to see that 10% no-tax savings. I bet I have spent 25 k with them over the last 10 years. Easy...

The 256GB version of the Air is discounted as well.

What I find annoying is that, with the current Mac lineup, I have to choose between getting a decent screen or getting a decent keyboard. And don’t get me started on the ports...

They have an over abundance of the models that people don’t want. You’re a perfect example.

2009 here as well. RAM and SSD and it feels better than new actually.

The current Macbook Air, completely unmodified in any way other than a retina screen, would be an amazing machine.
