Does MacRumors only have deals for the big-3 US carriers? Nothing for Dish Wireless or US Cellular? Nothing for the 100+ mobile virtual network operators in the US? Do these lower-cost carriers really have no bargains on these devices? MacRumors: are we the customer, or are we the product? There must be at least one bargain in those 100 MVNOs.

Best carrier offer on SE will be during Black Friday/Christmas holiday.

$99 for 2022 iPhone SE like we saw with 2020 iPhone SE during the last 2 Black Fridays/Christmas'?

Nothing stopping you from paying the phone off early…

But then the monthly credits stop. You probably would’ve received more for the trade-in from Apple, etc. compared to the credits received from the carrier if you pay off early. These deals are only worth it if you plan on sticking with the same carrier for the entire 36 months.

FWIW on T-Mobile the credits keep going even if you pay off the phone. I've done this several times with T-Mo.

Installment plans, why? So that they can lock me in?
This is so annoying.

What is annoying about it? It's just another option for customers. No one is being forced to go with a discount/inflated trade-in offer. Many people tend to stick with the same carrier for a while anyway.

Tying us down AND lock the phone for 3 years.

Yes, that's how they work but no one is being forced to take one of these offers. A customer can choose to pay full price and not be locked in or can potentially save hundreds of dollars off the price of the phone to be locked in for 24 to 36 months (to get full credits). Many people stick with carriers for at least that long anyway.

A lot of plans and subscriptions offer discounts when choosing optional longer term commitments.

You might not understand what I mean by locking the phone.
It means you cannot swap a different SIM into it even while traveling overseas.

Sounds like they know. As mentioned though, it doesn't matter for likely a large number of postpaid customers.

For those whom it matters, there are other options available (pay in full, Apple iPhone Upgrade Program, Apple Card installments, pay off remaining balance and forfeit credits, etc).

Mind, only AT&T locks their iPhones. Verizon is automatically unlocked within 2 months and T-Mobile is always unlocked afaik. We're on AT&T and we keep our old iPhones for backup and travel. Bonus, we're not worrying about our main phone getting lost/stolen.

The only issue with the plan of using the backup phone is that, the Mario Kart data can only be used on 1 device. ?
But in all seriousness, these kind of "discounts" are not for everyone.

Sure, they're not for everybody. I prefer cash discount (e.g. Walmart) or AIUP myself.

That said, I expect the trade-in program works well enough on a lot of people so it appears to be more or less permanent now.

Same here. The "credit" is not as good as cash discount.

On the other hand, this may sound crazy, but there is no trade-in value available for the 13 pro yet.
We will have fellows who want the alpine green bad enough. ?
