I have an older OWC Thunderbolt 3 dock with 13 ports (not the more common 12). The 13th port/difference is a FireWire connector, allowing me to use my old FireWire peripherals, even under Monterey. I appreciate that FW is an old standard but was there another reason OWC dropped it from their docks, as it’s so useful – to me at least?

Pretty sure you answered your own question there: The last Mac that shipped with a FireWire port was released over a decade ago and discontinued 9 years ago, so the number of people like you for whom it's actually useful is tiny and decreasing, making it not worth the expense of continuing to include a now-exotic legacy port and controller that almost no customers will actually use.

Not to mention: How many people who do have use for a FireWire port don't already have a dock with one?

You can buy an Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter for $40, so it's not like you can't use surviving FireWire peripherals with an OWC dock if you do need a new one, and that's probably exactly what OWC calculated made the most sense.

Random trivia: The time between the last Mac with a FireWire port at the switch to Apple Silicon was slightly longer than the time between the last Mac with either an ADB or SCSI port and the switch to Intel.

That was what I suspected.

Incidentally, for anyone with legacy FW devices, you can get them to work in current Macs. Just connect an Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter to your Mac’s Thunderbolt 4 port and an Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire into the adapter. Hey presto – a working FireWire port.

I have an old Edirol (Roland) FW external audio interface and a FW film scanner both still working happily on my Apple Silicon MacBook Air – now through my OWC dock’s FW port but previously using the solution above.

Thats insane! I wonder if it would work for PC too, probably would!

This is actually a very good deal on the cards. I sprung for two 128gig sd cards and almost bought a 512gig cf fast card even though I don't own a camera that uses it yet.

It might, although it looks like StarTech will still sell you a PCIe FireWire card which if you have a desktop with at least one slot is similar in cost and probably a better option. I remember a sound studio years ago with one of these in a Dell to connect the FireWire audio interface.

Interestingly, StarTech also lists MacOS compatibility from 10.6 through 13, so apparently you can stick one of these into a modern Mac Pro as well.
