A pair of discounts on Apple's 2022 13-inch MacBook Pro and 2020 MacBook Air have appeared today on Amazon, offering up to $199 off these notebooks. As of writing, these sales are only available on Amazon.

MacBook Air

Starting with the 2020 M1 MacBook Air, the 256GB model is on sale for the all-time low price of $799.99, down from $999.00. Space Gray and Gold colors are available at this price, although shipping for both has begun to stretch into April.

This version of the MacBook Air sports a tapered design and does not have the updated chassis of the newer M2 MacBook Air models. It has the M1 chip and a 13-inch Retina display, and today's sale matches the previous all-time low price seen on Amazon for the computer.

MacBook Pro

Moving to the 256GB 13-inch MacBook Pro, this model is on sale for $1,149.00 on Amazon, down from $1,299.00. This is a second-best price on the MacBook Pro, but we haven't tracked record low prices since last fall and this remains the best price that we've seen so far in 2023.

Secondly, the 512GB 13-inch MacBook Pro is on sale for $1,349.99, down from $1,499.00. This is another second-best price on the 13-inch MacBook Pro, and it's available in Space Gray and Silver on Amazon.

the M1 Air is a little dated, but still a good deal, for the M2 MBP however, I'll say get a M2 air or wait for last gen pro's to drop in price.

This is sure the way to go if you can wait. The problem is all the new product "hype" makes it difficult to wait. In my case I only was able to get to the point where I could patiently wait for the price I wanted was to watch fewer (MUCH fewer) YouTube "reviews." Watching some of the YouTubers can make you think you can't last another moment without 2 more ghz in speed. 😄

I feel like Apple is gonna keep around the M1 Air to become their cheapest notebook ever. They need something to compete with Chromebooks and Surface Go's.

That would be awesome. I love this machine (currently typing on it). I only use it for streaming and messing about so I'm underutilizing it but it's still impressive nonetheless, even the base model. A Window machine or Chromebook would have the fans blazing even with light use. This rarely gets warm, very rarely. I held an M1 Air side by side with the M2 Air and the M1 Air was cooler to the touch and the speakers sounded better.

I'm wondering if I should get the outgoing 16GB RAM model or wait for an updated version with a 3nm chip. The extra battery life would be awesome. But I love the form factor of the 2020 M1.

I don't know about Chromebooks and the Surface Go. You can get an okay Chromebook for $300 and the Surface Go starts at $400 although I could imagine how bad it is using Windows on that 4GB RAM base model.

I think it's target audience is college students on a budget. It's going to function and perform about the same as the M2 Air but it does look dated. If you're the poor kid you probably don't have a cool car or clothes so a cool M2 Air isn't going to help you anyways 🤣

Thats the same audience that uses Chromebooks and cheap Windows notebooks. If Apple can have a notebook thats at least 699, those 'poor' college students will spend a little bit more considering, this is something they are gonna keep for 4 or more years.

Wait you already have an M1 Air and you're wondering if you should buy an M2 or a higher configuration M1? Maybe if you have money buring a hole in your pocket. IMO it would be wasteful unless you have a specfic need for more RAM or something is wrong with your current M1 Air.

I don't think the same people who are buying a M1 Air are using a $300 Chromebook for the same purpose. Maybe they have a cheap Chromebook just to toss in their bag for going someplace because they don't want their Air to get stolen. It's been a like two years since I took a college course but they wanted everything in MS Word so that kind of kills the Chromebook. Maybe that was just the college I went to though. Sure there's the web version but it's not great. I think that college student would be spending about $600 on a decent Windows laptop. I agree if Apple could bring the price of the M1 Air to $699 that would hit the target market really hard. I'm not sure Apple is going to keep the M1 Air around that long though.

I meant an M1 with 16GB. Yah, I wouldn't buy both an M3 and an M1 as that would be a waste of money, as you said. Even though I hate the form factor and less beefy heatsink of the M2, it would be nice to have a 3nm chip with better battery life and better GPU.

My only problem with M1 machines is that the GPU is limited. Sharing 8GB of RAM for video gets taxing when I use an external 4K monitor. I'm hoping 16GB will help with that. I just need a second computer for personal stuff. My main computer is a 16" Intel machine that I use for coding. I want another one for my personal stuff: banking, music, etc. But I like to use my external monitor, hence the extra RAM.

If Apple did that, they would dominate the $500-$700 market. Nothing Windows or Google have would even compete. I was at Microcenter and a kid (tween?) was trying to convince his dad to buy him a 14" M1 MBP and his dad told him that all he needs is MS Word and he should get a Windows machine for $500. I couldn't disagree with the father's logic. But if Apple brought the M1 price down, there would be no reason at all to get an entry level Windows machine. Perhaps for MS Excel but I doubt middle schoolers and high schoolers are really using Excel.

I live in a college town and I see most college kids with Airs and 14 inch M1/Pro MacBook Pro's anyway and the token Windows laptops sprinkled here and there. So, I think Apple is already winning among this demographic. There is another café I walk by on Saturday mornings when I go grocery shopping, all I see in there are 13 inch touch bar and Air MacBooks with MS Word and paragraphs of text. I rarely ever see Chromebooks to be honest. Another thing I have to wonder, these kids seem to have the latest iPhone Pro Maxes too. Rich parents or credit cards?

If you think 16 GB will help you with an external monitor, then sure perhaps it’s worth upgrading from an M on with 8 GB. And that same train of thought perhaps if you’re mostly using an external monitor, then don’t bother with the M2 because you’re not using it as a laptop much. Now if you’re taking it on the road then you have to decide if the form factor is really worth the extra money. You mentioned having more GPU power. Is it just a monitor you’re talking about or are you doing something GPU intensive? If you’re doing something that requires a GPU, perhaps consider a 14” MacBook Pro. That would be better with the active cooling and more powerful GPU. Where are the MacBook Air shines? Is it super light and most people just browse the web and do office documents so there’s not a whole lot of power needed.

Well, Microsoft office is available on macOS but I get where he was probably coming from. He probably figure that the kid wouldn’t take care of his stuff so I’ll just get him a cheap one. I think that’s where you have to know your kid. If he is destructive or just doesn’t have a sense of how much things cost then don’t spend $1000 buying him a Mac. Perhaps at that point there is some parenting failure on teaching him the value of things, but that’s a whole nother topic and thread 😂

You don’t exactly have to be rich in the USA to afford a $1500 laptop. You can’t exactly do it on a minimum wage job while trying to support yourself of course. If the college kid is living at his parents house or dorm that means he doesn’t have bills, and since his school is being paid for by student loans all the money he has is his. Some college kids get a stipend to live off of. I think it may come out of some type of student loan, but I’m not sure. It wouldn’t take much time to save up that much money. College kids spend more than that on beer 😂

This is a great deal, if someone needs the extra juice from the M2, they most likely should get a MBP. The design has been around for a while, but at the price, this a far better deal than you can get with any M2 notebook.

Like I need another Mac. I already have too many Windows laptops and Mac Mini's but this is a solid deal where in some cases the M1 Air is faster than the M2. So I decided to buy another Mac.

I’m a graduate student currently; and the same dynamic baffles me. So many people have M1 or M2 MacBooks and just use the computer for basic word processing.

There’s also surprisingly large amount of people that use old, lit up logo MacBooks. These users tend to be the ones with older iPhones or Android phones.

College students frequently have all of the above- some stipend, government assistance, and gifts from mommy and daddy of new phones and technology. Plus, when you’re spending 10 hours + a day in front of a screen studying, it’s worth it to spend money on something good.

There’s no way Apple would drop down the price of this machine enough to compete with Chromebooks or even the Surface Go. That’s a huge jump down.

Apple doesn’t intend to compete in the market of computers with serious compromises on display, build quality, trackpad, etc.

I see the older back lit Apple MacBooks on the Ave, phones tend to be iPhone 8 Plus or iPhone X among this group. But its crazy how many Mac's are used by students. Its pretty much the platform of choice.
