sigh, back in my day you could get an iPhone 3g for two hundred bucks. I miss those days.

Does it make sense to by any non-Apple CPU model these days?

It is a hard call. From what I see the stability and compatibility of the early M1 machines are mixed. If stability, compatibility or running Windows in a VM is paramount then an end of life intel buy makes sense. The best choice, if you have the option, is to give Apple a couple of years to smooth out the Apple silicon bumps then decide.

The discount must consider the time until you'll be able to run your pro apps on an AS Mac. My Apogee Element 46 is only partially compatible. Homebrew packages are still being ported. I wonder if Java is already running for Java development. And so on... the discount is great, but I wonder if we'll have a fully compatible platform for our apps and devices until mid-2021.

Unless you need Windows compatibility or run apps that do not support the M1 chip it does not.

Much larger performance/money ratio on the new systems. And if you need a bigger display and can wait they should be coming next year.

FWIW, I really happy moving from 2019 16" and 2020 13" to M1 based Air. Will add a 14" Mxx/M2 next year.

Remember when Apple computers were in such high demand there were no sales?
They were also not sold everywhere, you'd be hard pressed to find Mac's at a electronics wholesaler, you'd have to find an Apple authorised reseller, which back in the day were very Desktop Publishing minded (along with other creative industries)... Now, you can get them at PCWorld (UK) and similar in the US.. with stiff competition

I was worried about the M1 vs Intel thing but I got the 16 after using a late 2008 unibody daily. Im so blown away! I don't think it matters really if you're on older hardware what you get right now if you're worried about that.

Well, sort of. The additional $400 or so was baked into your cell phone service plan... that was why you had to sign a 2 or 3 year agreement (depending on your country) to get that price. But feel free to remember the past as you choose to remember it.

Maybe... depends on your needs. I just did a 2019 iMac (27") from the refurb store after the M1 Macs were released... for me, it just made sense to get what I needed when I needed it. The M1 looks really promising, but it's not been tested in the real world yet... never buy anything with a low serial number. :D

I met with Apple execs 10 years ago to discuss an idea I had

Solar panel cells on the laptop lid so when your outside the laptop would charge itself.

10 years later. Still no solar power lid laptop.

Now THAT IS INNOVATION.
