A few notable discounts on Apple's MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models have appeared at Amazon and B&H Photo this week. Earlier in the week we shared news of 2020 MacBook Air notebooks for $100 off, and now the latest 13-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are seeing solid discounts.

Are there any average durations between releases and price drops like these?

Does anyone have the time / interest in going through old MR articles and seeing how long after releases prices drop And by how much?

(would be cool to have a general guideline - “if I wait X months I can save X much on average after release, and I’m going to tell myself that the next time something comes out to avoid the feeling of missing out on these deals”)

I would advise to get a 2019 15” MacBook Pro instead of the 2020 13” MacBook Pro. Especially if you use your MacBook with an external keyboard. The 2020 13” MacBook Pro is too close to the transition to the Apple Silicon. Therefore, you should be able to get much better spec’ed hardware in a one-year-old 15” MacBook Pro for about the same price as the 2020 13” (with 10th generation). Even a better deal would be the 2018 15” MacBook Pro. Do not go for 2017 or 2016 because of the first generation TB3 (Alpine Ridge) used in those. You will have difficulty using them with non-TB3 5K monitors in the future.

This is a great time to get a MacBook Pro now. Get AppleCare with it, use it for 3 years and it's protected. Three years from now evaluate the new ASIC processing Mac's, take old Mac to Apple store. Trade in and get a ASIC computer that has gotten all the hiccups worked out of it. Back to school time :)

Don't you think some customers would prefer the 13'' size over the 15''?

I also don't think it's that big of a deal if someone were to buy one of these now. The introduction of the Apple's chips in their laptops won't render the Intel ones obsolete overnight.

It would be nice if the MacRumors Buyer's Guide included a price reduction guestimated date based on prior price drops like you suggest.

Amazon and Best Buy both started selling the latest MBPs with regular $100 discounts. I’d almost say don’t buy a 13” MBP that isn’t discounted by at least $100. The 15/16” models seem to get regular $300 discounts shortly after release. Haven’t seen any discounts on BTO models though, only stock models offered by Apple. B&H Photo Video does sell BTO models so one may be able to find discounts on those models there.

Early adopters of Apple silicon I’ll let beta test for me. Software devs won’t ditch support for the tons of Intel Macs out there anytime soon.

If you have a Mac from the last 3-5 years I’d say wait it out for another couple and get a 2nd or 3rd gen ARM if you really are itching for an upgrade. My 2019 will last me for another 5 years easily with my use cases.

The new Intel macs will be fine machines for years to come.
