Something is going on here? You know what I'm starting to think? A whole lot of people upgraded to M1 both Air and Pro during the pandemic and they have absolutely no need for an upgrade. The M1 Pro and Max MacBook Pro's were the mop up crew that finished things off. Then the threat of recession scared people into saving whatever disposable income they had and avoid any non-essential upgrades.

I am concerned if there is gonna be much if any demand for the M3.

On the contrary, I think a sizable segment are skipping M2 and holding out for the M3 for the very reasons you've laid out.

Apple didn't do themselves any favors with the high pricing. Personally, during the M2 phase I've spec'ed out and dumped at least three orders on different systems based on not being able to justify the final price after getting dinged $200/$400 per BTO upgrades.

Absolutely something is going on. B&H photo doesn’t want to be stuck with M1 MacBook Pros when the M3 models come out.

I’d say this is a very good analysis. Unless you just have money to burn, there would be no reason for most people to upgrade to an M2 or an even an M3 MacBook Pro if you already had the M1.

I know we love benchmarks in the tech community, but in the real world most of us aren’t going to feel a life-changing event when we have three minutes shaved off that 4K render for our YouTube channel. Now if you’re MKBHD and you’re making over million dollars a month (just my guess, I don’t know his income but I’m sure it’s ridiculous) three minutes is critical. I don’t suspect even many people out here in these forms are MKBHD. Maybe he has an account so if you’re him then yes go for the M3 but for the rest of us, M1 is just fine.

I really wish I had a business reason to get a new laptop. A powerful Pro one at that.

Do you have an M1 MacBook Pro and what do you think the M3 is going to do for you that your M1 isn’t doing?

Serious question because I just don’t see it how it’s going to be better in any way that makes a difference with day-to-day use. Maybe your use is specialized or something?

If you don’t need the Pro, I’d say, go with the Air. You’re not going to notice any difference unless you’re using some capability that the Pro offers. If you’re not rendering 4K videos, you’re not going to notice all the graphics power because it’s not doing anything with most tasks.

It’s kind of like having a Lamborghini but never driving over 25 mph. Sure there’s a cool factor so maybe that’s your motive and that’s fine but with normal use you won’t tell the difference. If you’re carrying it with you, you will notice the weight difference of the Air. Also, there’s rumors of a larger MacBook Air so that will be interesting.

I need an M3 Air. If the M3 pro comes out before the Air I will be in a pickle because don’t need pro. Yes yes ultra first world problems.

I wish I even had a business reason for a new Air 😆

The 15” is extremely interesting, but I still have a Dell laptop on windows 10 that runs really well, so no argument for a new computer other than “I wanna”. Ha

I have an M1 Mini that I ordered as soon as they went on sale. I upgraded the RAM -- I've no qualms on paying for the SoC RAM upgrades. However, since I had no idea how soon I'd be able to transition my workflows from x86, I didn't upgrade the SSD. I regretted that decision a few months down the road after I was able to start being productive on the M1, but an external drive was always in the cards.

Apple's current price ladder hasn't given me a persuasive upgrade path.
  • I considered swapping the M1 Mini for an M2 Mini, but they only offered $350 for my Mini and the new one quickly tops $2k with upgrades. That's too much to replace a system that doesn't need replacing.
  • I considered replacing my i9 MBP, but after experiencing the performance of the M1, I don't want Max weight. An Air would be nice, but once again it quickly tops $2k with upgrades. My i9 still works fine even if it makes these strange whirring noises from what I remember are things called "fans."
When the M3 is released, I'll go through the same decision tree.

Not sure it's a huge "News Flash" that B&H is closing out a discontinued model with big discounts. Saying it's "$1,400 off" the original price is just clickbait - it's priced "Where it should be" given the age of the devices.

To me it looks like many people are not sure about the apple silicon roadmap and when to buy a new one? In the beginning it sounded like they would immediately be expanded with more cores and a flood of new generations at short intervals. After some time it becomes clear that progress is slower and only custom software can make full use of apple silicon plus the eGPU question is far from being solved. Add extreme prices for bigger storage and RAM that won't be upgradeable later on and it is no surprise people possibly facing a recession are hesitant to buy.
It's good to see prices come down a bit I have played with the idea to get a more budget friendly M1 MBP myself finally needing to switch from intel to Apple silicon. But for now I am waiting and hoping for the M3.

It's more than that as it's not just an M2 MBP sale. There are M1 MBP's being heavily discounted at B&H too.

I've also seen big discounts on M1 MBP's over the past month from retailers such as Costco, Best Buy, Micro Center, and Adorama.

Didn't think there was that much M1 MBP inventory still out there.

MKBHD is not upgrading from his M1 Max, he recently said so in his Waveform pod cast. I think 5 years ago someone saw the ad revenue from his channel, which was 35K a month. Its likely gone up significantly since then, especially when you can buy a 40k iPhone 2007.

Well its not even M1 users, but there are still a lot of Intel Mac users out there and they don't seem to want to upgrade. Its like Apple developed the M2 with them in mind, but they are not budging. I also think Apple was thinking whoever bought a M1 in 2020 might be enticed to upgrade to a more expensive Pro model with Pro or Max chip.

Just like the Mac Pro, I think Apple has backed themselves into a corner where they are likely gonna have to do planned obsolescence to get people to upgrade.

I’d update to M2 if they put it in a pro machine like a studio. The mini pro m2 is temping but not quite

Why the heck would anyone need to upgrade from an M1 mac? I'm willing to bet that a very large percentage (probably 30-40%) of all Mac users are still on Intel hardware. Stuff from 2017 supports Ventura and for most general computing tasks, even older Apple hardware isn't challenged at all.

I think people that were interested in Apple silicon for its own merits probably upgraded during the initial M1 products. I think the rest of the Mac-using population is going to gradually shift over as Apple fades out support for new OS versions and as some of the missing holes (27" iMac) get filled in.

I don't think anyone with an M1 Mac of any variety should seriously be considering upgrades to M2 or M3 hardware. The Apple hardware upgrades are so minor and incremental that it will be many generations before its actually worth upgrading.

I wasn't saying they should, I am on an M1 MBP 13 inch and I have no desire intention to upgrade. My point is, M1 already wiped the floor and its gonna make it harder sell for us on the first gen to even consider an M4. I am personally looking at M6 as my next upgrade cycle. Intel is still out there and I should know, they are being deployed at work still.

3 grand for a 2 year old laptop with what was considered adequate storage space in the early part of Obama's 2nd term? LOL.
