Not sure I can wait much longer for a new laptop, and more specifically, a 13" MacBook. I may shell out for the 16" this week, despite disliking the size. Maybe the lack of 13" refresh is to boost sales for the more-expensive 16".

Anyone else in the same boat? Not a lot of rumors to suggest an imminent 13" refresh. I am very confused as to why Apple didn't refresh both MacBook sizes.

Not uncommon for Apple to not refresh multiple sizes at once. Going all the way back to the 1st retinas that were available in 2012 with the retina display at 15". They did not update the 13" to retina display for many months.

The two products aren't necessarily linked to each other. Apple can cherry pick when to upgrade products however they please. Usually availability of parts/components is why similar product lines don't get refreshed at the same time. Like the chips Apple was waiting for that are good for the bigger size MBP and the ones that Apple uses for the smaller MBP don't always get released by Intel at the same time (Intel's constant delays has actually been an issue for Apple's plans for quite a while now). Which is more realistic reason why their refresh cycles aren't in line with each other. It's not a conspiracy. Just more moving parts than you're aware of.

All rumors I have seen point to first half of 2020 for the 13 refresh.

Me too. Actually I need as PORTABLE mbp as possible with reliable kb, so have no way but waiting for 13inch refresh

I thought we'd seen the new 13/14" class devices reported in benchmarks in the last week, no?

They are coming - hang on if you can.

I feel you, but at the end of the day, I sold my 2017 15" due to portability (it was spec'd out, the capability of it would still be more than enough), so I will wait as long as needed for the 13"/14".

I use to hate 15" laptop, and would never dare get a 16-17" laptop. 13" although on the smaller side, is perfect for travel. That being said, I was forced into using a few 15" Thinkpad's at work and after a short while they really grew on me. Now, I just prefer the 15-16" laptops, and having picked up the 16" today I couldn't imagine going smaller. If Apple came out with a 14", I may consider getting a base model for a 2nd traveling laptop, but otherwise this 16" will be my single machine.

I think it is a fairly common strategy to introduce a new generation from the top.

Your margins are higher and the volumes tend to be lower making it less risky if there are issues and easier to handle in manufacturing.

I do travel a lot with my 15 / 16”. As long as you keep it in a backpack I see no issues, but if you want to use it on a flight I would go with a 13”. For me the screen estate is worth more than the inconvenience and I adapt to that.

OP:

If you want a new MBP 13" (or possibly, 14"), you'll have to wait until around May/June.
A revision -might- be released earlier, but no one can answer that yet -- it's ALL speculation.

If you "need NOW", well, your only choice is to BUY "now".
So... if you want the new scissors keyboard, it's gotta be the 16" MBP...

The 16 inch is actually really nice. I wasn't sure if I'd like the size or not but it's a fantastic working size (and is barely larger than the 15.4 inch). I didn't like to code on just a laptop until the 16 inch. I know it sounds stupid because it's only .6 inch difference but something about it just makes it feel bigger, and I definitely notice when I switch back to my work laptop.

I'm sure you'll really enjoy it. The battery life is fantastic too.

Is your work laptop a MacBook Pro? Apple laptops are 16:10, which makes a big difference to most Windows laptops that are 16:9. Although there are some that are 3:2, which should be brilliant for coding (if only they had macOS).
