Dear Steve,
After very happily using the 1st generation iPhone for about 6 months, I've come to accept that the iPhone 3G I'm using now is apparently a beta product. The frustration with its everyday use is getting ridiculous, and like another poster, I sometimes just want to throw this phone out the window.
Notwithstanding the well documented 3G reception and connection problems, the UI is the most clunky, inconsistent, and crash-prone Apple application (other than Switcher) I've used in over 20 years of Apple products. Even with the 2.0.2 update, the lag times within and between iPhone functions and apps is very frustrating. Also, many times throughout the day Safari will apparently choke and crash, as will several apps. The delays from one screen to another in Maps and other apps is also disappointing, as is the keyboard lag. It just seems as if the CPU is way underpowered to handle the software. As for 3G, I've just turned it off, with extremely poor reception and dropped calls, it is simply unusable.
I really didn't plan to be a beta tester, so I do hope the iPhone 3G will be out of 'beta' with the planned September software update. And like many others, I hope that its just the software that is the problem.
