I was in downtown San Diego today for the Comic Con and I noticed the iPhone signal was consistently at 5 bars. So, I tested the death grip and it stayed at 5 bars with no degradation to the apps I was running. I did not try a call but perhaps I will as I will be there this weekend. I guess it is a matter of signal.

Interesting, let me know what happens!

Also, bring some type of video recording device with you. :p

1. Did I miss the part where he said he was in an Apple Store?

2. Many people have been able to use the death grip in Apple Stores.

you know apple stores have signal repeaters right

Maybe some. I had one bar of service at mine. Demonstrating the death grip was all too easy. Interestingly enough, 4.0.1 doesn't show a "Searching for Signal" message. It just can't make calls or use data. Apple's being somewhat dishonest.

Exactly. Not sure why this was brought up. There are no Apple Stores downtown, I was walking down 5th Ave.

that saying is played out, go surf some message boards and steal a new line

That and "troll" are pretty much the lamest things one can post on a forum. Everytime I read a person calling someone that I instantly thing 5 year old kid name calling.

You forgot hater and fanboy.

obviously
death grip = overplayed

Yeah behind all the snark that's what I was alluding to. I can do the death grip from my office or home but yesterday downtown was the first time I experienced a null-return on the death grip. 5 bars while holding it for well over a minute while surfing the internet/checking mail. The signal must be very overpowering in that area.

How is your coverage in the rest of San Diego? I find mine to be pretty poor.

Good to poor depending on where I'm at. It's pretty bad from inside my office, but most of the time I'd characterize it as ok-to-good. I can't complain about coverage, I don't drop calls and I'm satisfied in general with AT&T coverage-wise in San Diego.
