Anyone experience this?

I used my debit card on a new website last week - yeah I know I should have used a credit card - and last night noticed $200 in unauthorized charges used on Shein.com. I immediately attempted to contact my bank to report the charges and turn off my debit card. Wouldn't you fricking know it but there's no way to do this on a Sunday. I found an option to turn the card off on the mobile app, but it was for my old debit card!!! Now I sit here 8 hours later with ALMOST $700 IN FALSE CHARGES waiting for the stupid bank to open at 7 am!!! I am so furious right now. What fricking bank wouldn't have fraud prevention 24/7?? BERKSHIRE BANK, that's who!! Stay away from them!!!

Anyone get reimbursed from debit card fraud? It is a MasterCard if that makes a difference.

I work in LE./Cyber-infil. First off, just a quick Google search shows that site is flagged for spamware and it isn’t secure either. Not sure why you’d want to input your information on an unsecure site.

You’ll have to check the terms and conditions of your bank, which would have to be proven the charges were without your consent. Every credit/debit card has some type of liability insurance, but it depends on the circumstances of the situation that will take time to investigate.

Also, your bank may request you to complete a fraud packet, which they will request a copy of to be on file. They’ll likely have their own or recommend your local police department to compete and transfer.

Nope. They do. Literally took me 8 seconds to find this information that you must’ve overlooked.

The back of your debit card should have a fraud hotline. If it’s not manned 24 hrs a day I’m sorry.

They will cancel and reissue a card, complete a fraud report, and once validated you can expect reimbursement.

As you mentioned a credit card is better than a debit. Alternatively you could deliberately keep a small amount of $ in the account the debit card is attached to in case of fraud charges. Then transfer funds into it as needed.

Best case is to use a cc so your cash flow isn’t impacted in the event of fraud.

I didn’t tell the whole story. That is the same number that is on my card. I called that number 5 times last night and the fraud prompt just sent me in a loop because it didn’t recognize the number I was calling from. It was after hours and the “reps” manning the phones were not equipped to help me in any way. Complete junk.

It only has a Customer care number which proved useless.

But at least the bank will have you on record as attempting to report the fraud. Some banks have a 24-48 hour period (and some longer) to report it but you can check your bank's fraud policy.

This is exactly the reason that I have two accounts. One account is connected to the card I use online and in stores. I transfer the exact dollar amount needed to make purchases. Other than that the balance stays at 0. There is no card connected to the account that holds my cash. I’ve been screwed over by google charges way too many times.

I’m sorry that you’ve gotta go through this. Hopefully the reimburse you. A lot of banks will give you a temporary credit. Pending the final outcome of the investigation. Which can in some cases take months.

Yeah they said it could take 60-90 days or so. One of the charges was reversed this morning so that lessens the impact a little.

Now I’m suspicious it could have happened when I went through the Burger King drive-thru and handed the girl my card. That is last time I actually used it. I usually use Apple-Pay but their machine wasn’t working so I just grabbed a card and handed it to her. She had plenty of time to jot the information down and all charges took place after that. I go there all the time so it didn’t even cross my mind at first…..I guess that’s a lesson to stay away from that junk food.

I once had $2,500 in mobile game charges from google. Learned a very hard lesson that day. I wish you the best of luck in getting your money back.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I’m glad I don‘t keep a lot in there - just enough to cover bills plus $500. They got the $500 ?

The bank will refund the charges, it is more of an inconvenience than anything else.
Even more so, with fraudulent charges when it is an exact amount, the investigators can quickly determine it was fraudulent.

After all, who purchases something for exactly $200, with no tax or VAT (if in the UK)?

I do the exact same thing and use a prepaid card when I do transactions.

The OP mentioned something worth noting. And that’s Apple Pay being the primary source of my transactions. I rarely, if ever use my Debit card anymore. I won’t even frequent retailers/establishments that don’t support Apple Pay. It’s to easy to be a victim of crime. Most credit/debit card fraud is of opportunity for criminals, it’s generally not premeditated. It’s just to easy for someone to ruin your credit/use your funds in seconds that now has to be remedied through multiple channels to restore your funds and identity. (Plus, your local credit channels will be affected).

Also, with the holidays approaching, definitely be vigilant, and use digital payment versus ‘swipe & pay.’ If you’re using online payments/shopping, make sure the site is secure and authenticated with encryption.

And I'll add read your bank and/or credit card company's fraud policies so you know how it works before you need them. If it happens to you, you're going to feel panicky and that's not an ideal time to read through policy language.

As somebody who works in Cyber Infil, I actually didn’t even think of this myself. So I will take the time to review my own policies/procedures, I changed cardholders not that long ago. That’s excellent information.

Meh. Debit cards can be attached to Apple Pay as well. I don’t for the reasons I gave the op earlier. Contactless payment is definitely convenient but I certainly don’t choose my merchants based on it. I tap my watch when it’s available (love it) but swipe my card when it isn’t. I rarely find it unavailable.

NEVER use your debit card. Use it to get money from the ATM, but never, ever use it to purchase online stuff. It is a pathway into your bank account. Contact your bank, have them inactivate it, send you a new card and number and never do something like that again. You might as well give them your social security , your pin number too. These people will drain your bank dry and then disappear.

Just never use your debit card in place of your credit card especially for online services. Oh with the Apple card, it has a thing where you can generate a single use CVS code for each purchase as it is supposed to prevent charges more than once for a card purchase. I use paypal often when Ican.

To be clear - I didn’t say that I used Shein.com, I said that’s where the unauthorized transactions were made. I never mentioned the new site I used but it was a legit site that sells jigsaw puzzles - seriouspuzzles.com.

Appreciate the clarification. Hopefully everything works out for you with your fraudulent charges.

Thank you. I’ve been a customer for years so hopefully they do the right thing and refund me.

The Burger King drive-thru girl has been exonerated. I was in contact with a corporate lady who apparently went down there today and watched a video of the transaction and there was no funny business observed.

I shared my story with my wife last night, and I mentioned you said something about Burger King and that’s where your debit card was last allegedly used, and I literally said out loud, ‘I bet that’s where it happened’. So that’s good that you followed up with them to determine that’s not the place of occurrence.

Years ago (It was national news), there was a female that used a Starbucks drive-through and the employee abducted her debit card information and racked a bunch of charges and ultimately the customer confronted the employee about the issue in the drive through line. [I believe there’s even a YouTube video on this.] It even prompted Starbucks to completely change how they were handling payment methods after that incident. So it goes to show you, you just never know where exactly fraud starts and where it ends.

And undoubtedly, your charges will be reversed, sometimes it’s a timely aspect with the investigation, as every card holder is a bit different.

There sure is….

I bet this has happened a lot. I’m sure I’ve read of other instances.

Edit: Yep!
