Decimal byte representation

Has anyone elses mac fairly recently started showing decimal representations of bytes, i.e. my hard drive now shows as 250gb, whereas it used to show as ~230, and 700mb movies now show as 734mb?

That has been the case since 2009 with the introduction of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

Seriously? I can't believe I've only just noticed this, was there any reason for changing it?

I can understand the confusion between rated hard drive capacity and reported capacity on the OS, but I thought if a change were to happen it would be that of hard drives' rated capacity.

Interestingly, itunes reports my iphone at 14.29gb
