I was just reading a MBA 11" review that talked about the different LCD panels Apple installs, and a Terminal command you can enter to get the serial # of your display. Since I have a 23" Cinema display i just bought, i tried the command

ioreg -lw0 | grep IODisplayEDID | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

the response:
2A3456XXXXX (i have cut out the last five digits)
Cinema HD

i googled this serial #, and i actually got a hit! An Apple discussions thread from September, with a guy saying he had 2 monitors and they didn't match -- though he called this one a 20" model, and I have the 23". maybe identical serial #s can be found across different display sizes.

However the plastic insert on the bottom of my Cinema display has the serial #: 2A8024YXXXXX

this is a much higher number, if it means anything. Also, my display came with the Apple packaging which showed Leopard on the box -- meaning it could only have been sold in the last year that the 23" Cinema display was sold.

So what i'm thinking is either the serial # that is engraved on the plastic bottom on the display is not equal to the serial # that will come up in Terminal, OR the guy had 2 displays and swapped the serials on them so i'd think i was getting a newer display...
