I'm going to make a decision tonight. I can't get enough hands on at CompUSA to get a feel for the performance I'll be stuck with. Anyone with a 1GHz or 800MHz 17" iMac please answer these questions:
Does the superdrive have buffer underrun protecion?
Can OSX burn a CD and multitask well with 1 CPU (i.e. can you burn a CD and brows the web with no performance degradation)
Are there any performance problems with full-screen DVD playback. Any at all?
Is there any performance degradation playing MP3s while working in Office, browsing web etc.?
Any performance problems with Office for X or Quicken?
These may seem trivial but these are the symptoms people with lowend PCs have and I want to know what to expect.
How bad are the bad pixels with the iMac 17" display I keep hearing about. I've had a 15" Mag for 2 years without a single problem. It's distrubing tha the cutting edge Mac seems to have this problem and Apple is reluctant to fix it for its users.
Lastly, there's a whole lot of bug fixes for OS X and weekly builds. That's a lot. How bad is my experience going to be. Because all I want is an iMac, and I'll be locke into it, I'm basically throwing away 2k on an expensive toy. I want to make sure I'm not really just throwing it away.
That's about it, this will not be a production machine except for my writing. Any answers based on actual experience with these machines appreciated.
