Which HomePod Would You Get?

I own a first gen HomePod. I was thinking about getting a second HomePod in order to create a **stereo pair**. I am using my HomePod as an home theater speaker and wanted to create a stereo pair for even better sound. I found a few options on eBay for around $299 and was thinking of picking one up.

Then Apple went and released a second generation HomePod for the same price. I was all good to give Apple my AppleCard when I learned that you cannot create a stereo pair between a first and second generation HomePod.

Apple, WTF?

Anyway, so the question now is:

***Do I buy a used 1st gen HomePod to create a stereo pair with my current HomePod or do I buy two 2nd generation HomePods?***

Buying a used 1st gen would be cheaper versus buying two new 2nd gen HomePods. But a 1st gen HomePod isn’t exactly future proof. What to do?

For the price of two HomePods you could get a really nice soundbar that will sound far better and give you infinitely less headaches.

So if you must have apple gear, get the old one. All the headaches for half the price.

I suppose you could see if you can sell your current one for $299 like the others you found on eBay, but that ship may have sailed now that there's a new version. If you're lucky, then you'd essentially be trading in the old one for the new one (and buying an additional one). The cost would be roughly the same in the end either way.

If this is strictly about the home theatre experience then forget homepod and get a dedicated soundbar, this is unless your room is small.

If this is about music audio, then wait until the second gen hits the shelves , the used Og prices will then plummet - grab one and complete your stereo pair. Then if you want more HomePods in future you start with the 2nd Gen.

Wish I had kept the original box!

This is exactly what I would do in your situation, OP

I use my HomePod almost exclusively for music. I had been considering a second HomePod for the stereo pair for music for awhile now.

I recently moved to a much smaller place with a living room that is only 10x12. I recently rearranged my furniture and needed to consolidate some things. I took my LG sound bar off the TV and replaced it with my HomePod. I think it sounds as good if not better than the sound bar, though the sound bar does better with dialog.

Almost all content watched comes with my AppleTV. I don't have cable and I don't do OTA.

I like the idea of seeing what happens to original HomePod prices after the 2nd gen hit the shelves.

I’m considering buying another OG HomePod to create a stereo pair as well. I think the 2nd gen is not a huge update, at least as far as sound quality is concerned. It has less tweeters and less microphones. I think the OG HomePod will still be around for a very long time.
