Somehow, my Force Touch Trackpad has developed a pretty significant scratch. So far I haven't noticed it impair usage, though I can feel it when I slide my finger across the trackpad.

I have AppleCare on my Macbook Pro, and I'd imagine it would be covered... Is this something Apple could fix in-store? Do they do that? I'm just moving in the next couple days and hesitant to send it in for repair? Heck, is it even covered under AppleCare?

I have been running my nails through my track pad this whole time because of how smooth it is. Now I know it can be scratched, I'll have to be more careful with it. Unfortunately, it is considered as a cosmetic damage and is not covered like posguy said

Looks like a double scratch, maybe near the bottom edge of the trackpad (near center right, as positioned in the photo).
Just appearance, and not likely to affect anything at all.

Its glass so anything under 5.4 moh shouldn't scratch it, nails certainly aren't anywhere near hard enough to.

I'm not seeing it. I'm sure OP, that you can feel it. Apple's warranty only covers manufacturing defects and not accidental damage. You can pay for the repair, but I suggest you just get used to it.

Gotcha. I had to go to the Apple Store to buy a Smart Cover, so I asked in passing... They said that if it causes "even occasional problems" it should be replaceable under AppleCare, but it wouldn't be done in-store, and since I'm moving in 3 days, I don't have time to wait. I can check it out once I get settled into the new place and report back!

Can't be that bad of a scratch, hardly visible. Apple will never touch that for repair and or is it worth to you have repaired, if it's even repairable.

Update for posterity -

While what you say does make sense with the policy, I finally got into the Apple Store (moved for law school, so been busy) and they immediately recognized the scratch and inspected. It passed diagnostics but they authorized an entire top-case repair at the depot. I'll have it back Tuesday - I'll update when it's complete.

Nice! What caused the scratch to begin with? How did Apple come to the conclusion with the repair? Glad to hear the repair will be fixed. I am a perfectionist with all my Apple products as well. Scratches bother me.

Not totally sure. I dropped a coffee mug (thankfully empty) on the computer, though I noticed the scratchy few days after... That's the only thing I can think of though. I actually had a small dent in the metal right to the side of the trackpad from when keys fell out of my backpack onto the laptop, which I guess will be replaced as well (and a new battery, I believe). All in all, worth the trip!

Cosmetic damage is not covered.

Sure, if you pay for it.

It is not.

See my update - apparently it is covered!

Final update (and a small one): It's back, and it's perfect. The replaced (to my eyes) everything expect the screen (which made me so happy, as I finally found one without splotchiness/uneven backlighting... Hard to find on the 15"!). Even the battery is new... Any minor scuffs I had on the bottom aluminum cover are gone... Couldn't be more excited. It's like getting a brand new laptop.
