Default audio setting (DAC)?

I have a Fiio DAC and every time I plug it into my 2016 MBP I have to manually go into Audio MIDI Setup and set the audio to play through the DAC otherwise it just comes out of the built-in speakers by default. Is there any way to make it so that it will automatically switch to the DAC when I plug it in?

I don't remember having to manually switch it all the time with my old MBP and DAC.

Not sure if you've tried this (or what you said involves this), but going to System Preferences> Sound and clicking to highlight your DAC in the Output tab should set that as the default device.
