I am not sure if this is best forum for this. And the issue is a bit long winded, but I do need some advice:
Mavericks was recently installed on my computer when a new hard drive was installed.
The computer now (for the first time) defaults to the "Documents" folder every time I open a file and want to re-name it or "Save As". It also does this when I open a text file and want to save it as a pdf.

I'd like to know if there is a way to stop this.

An example is, if I open a file I am working on or one I use as a template, and want to save the progress or new document as a new file under a new file name, (for example a letter I wrote to John Doe last year. I open it now from the "John Doe" folder I have within a "Letters" folder within my "Company" folder under "Documents". I want to use the old letter in order not to have to re-type the address and some of the boilerplate. and want to save it in the same folder but under a new name "Save As" in WORD)

All programs have always opened the "Save As" dialogue box and the "Export" dialogue to save the new (or newly renamed) file in the folder you took the file from.

Now, however, you see the proper folder name in the dialogue box for about 1/2 a second and then it defaults to the "Documents" folder. So, you have to go back through all the folders within Documents to get back to the proper folder.

Similarly, this happens when I want to save a WORD file to a pdf. Also, pages now does not offer the option to open a file, work on it, and save it under a new name.

Without going in to detail, please accept the fact that this causes me problems. I do not get why Apple would want to restrict its users in this way, especially after decades of allowing the flexibility. But I have not been able to figure out how to stop it.

Has anyone else experienced this? I'd love to hear how to fix this.
