Default speaker settings changed

I have a pair of Kef LS50II where the master speaker is hardwired to the MacBook Pro and was set as the default speaker for audio. Worked fine for the past 3 years.

Something changed and the audio now defaults to the internal MacBook speaker and I have to manually go into the audio settings and change it back to the Kefs.

Tried doing a PRAM reset and a factory reset on the Kefs with no effect and the internal speaker is still the default.

Any suggestions on how to change the audio back to the Kefs as default please?
