Default style in TextEdit etc.

The styles defined in TextEdit are picked up by a number of other programs I use (iData 3, Dossier).

I'd like to be able to define the "Default" style to include a ruler with NO tabs, but I can't get that setting to "stick".

Does anyone know where these styles are stored and if it's possible to edit the Default style?
