What the hell is this ugly thing even supposed to be? Someone who just learned how to use photoshop?

Why can't we go back to those awesome wallpapers taken from nature? Apple still names its OS updates with California locations. Just go there and take some pictures.

Those are pretty awful. I'd also never even seen them before. I have a folder chock full of pictures downloaded from Interfacelift that I rotate through automatically.

I suspect the only purpose of those "wallpapers" are to distinguish the different Mac generations simply by looking at the product image when shopping. Be it thumbnails online or the packaging in retail stores.
At least I do not remember any recent Mac where different generations were advertised with the same wallpaper...

If only you could choose what you put on your desktop. Alas, we're locked into the lousy image Apple provides. 😏

[Apple fanboy] Whatever Apple decides it's the best thing. It was nice with desktop pictures in the past, but now it is as equally nice to not have them. Besides, you can have whatever desktop picture you want, it isn't as if Apple has taken away that option. [/Apple fanboy]

It doesn't bother me that much that I would install a random app just to change the boot screen.

But it does bother me enough to want to complain about it here.
It’s not a random app. It’s one of the best maintenance tools available for macOS that also includes a bunch of cool customization tweaks. Everyone should have it installed. It’s also free.
