I have a quick, somewhat silly question that has been bugging me. Does anyone know how to set a default zoom in Word 08? The default on new documents is 100%, and I always have to bump it up 150% because I already spend a lot of time on my computer, and don't want to strain my eyes any further. It's a small thing, but it just seems like there should be an equally small solution.

For all new documents that you create, you can set the normal template to the zoom that you want.

Open a blank document. Set the zoom to where you want it to be. Type "hi", and then delete it. (This is only so that Word knows that the document has been changed in some way.) Hold the Shift key while you go to the File menu select Save All, then close the template.

This doesn't impact documents that you've already saved with their zoom set. You can either deal with manually setting the zoom to what you want it to be when you open it, or you can use a script to fix it on the document. If you just want to fix the zoom, it's faster to simply do that and then save; if there are other things that you want to fix (such as which view you use), check out this article from the Word MVPs: Set Window Size, View, and Zoom.

Nadyne.

Thanks, I think I inadvertently did the same thing as you suggested, and now the zoom is correct. I took a look at the other site, and it seems to have a lot good stuff.

Default Zoom Shortcut

For speeding this process up with existing documents, you can do the following:

View-->Toolbars-->Customize Toolbars and Menus
Choose Commands tab, select View, and drag the Fit to Window button to your toolbar

Then, you can also add a shortcut:
with the customize window still open, click the "Keyboard" button
Then, find the View and ViewZoomPageWidth command
In the space for "press the new keyboard shortcut", assign a keystroke. Control-Z is currently unassigned and quick to hit.

Then, use the shortcut when you open a new document--3 seconds or less.

Best solution available until Word puts it in the preferences....
