iPod touch Defective Battery?

My 1 gen touch is 10 months old, and the battery life isn't very pleasant.

I'm thinking about getting it replaced, but I'm not sure if it is deemed replaceable by Apple.

Is there any set method that Apple uses to test battery life that I can try myself before taking it to a store?

I had a questionable battery too. Here's the thread about it. I did get it replaced with a bit of hassle. Know your specs and find a decent qeniass.
