I want to have two views that overlap without having one be the superview of the other.

Specifically... I have several controls (switches, buttons, labels, text views, tabs, etc.) that I decided to embed into one view so that I could easily hide/show them all at once. Next I added a text view. For some reason... it made the big view become the superview of the text view. But when I hide the controls, I don't want it to hide the text view with them (and in fact, I want it to show the text view whenever it's not showing the controls.)

So how do I make the text view be the subview of the window only and have the big control view be a sibling of the text view (while still having the text view overlap the control view.)
