Definitive answer on Upgrading Ram beyond original specs

Macbook 6 white 2009 . What is the definitive answer to upgrading the max 4 gb Ram to 8 Gb ram? Can it be done? Original specs are max 4 gb but some say you can upgrade with more but Mac never updated there specs as this is beyond the era they were built and what was available at the time.

I have reviewed several threads and not sure really where they all lead to other than try and see.

Thanks for your excellent referneces again.

My aim is to punch out a bit more life in the old girl. Put in a 250Gb Samsung 840 series SSD and take the 4 Gb Ram to 8.
