Delay in Acquiring Airport Signal (Time Capsule)

Since picking up a Time Capsule, when I wake my MacBook Pro from sleep, there's a 30 second delay before OSX shows the list of available airports.

I'm also having a seemingly related problem where Time Machine will give me a backup error saying it can't create a backup directory.

Can anybody offer any insight?
